Genetic improvement technologies to support the sustainable growth of UK aquaculture

چکیده
While the UK is fourth largest aquaculture producer in Europe by volume, it second value with an annual first sale of around £1 billion. Over 90% this from Atlantic salmon farmed Scotland, but other finfish and shellfish species are important to several regions. In review, we describe state art breeding stock supply, how innovation genetics technologies can help achieve Scottish Government’s ambitious target doubling its industry 2030. Particular attention given four most species: salmon, rainbow trout, blue mussel Pacific oyster, contrast highly variable level selective genomics used these sectors. A major factor success farming has been large-scale investment modern programmes, including family selection programmes genomic selection. This proven cost-effective at scale, leading improved production efficiency reduction some infectious diseases. We discuss feasibility applying similar sectors, ensure consistent robust spat supply begin trait Furthermore, species-specific application a global context, future potential genome editing improve commercially desirable traits. Increased adoption will assist industries meet challenges for sustainable expansion, remain competitive market.

Israeli Aquaculture Genetic Improvement Programs
The history and status of aquaculture genetics in Israel were reviewed a few years ago (Hulata 1995). The current report reviews trends and progress of the second half of the 1990s, and provides the vision and perspective for the next couple of years. Selective breeding work is currently focused mainly on tilapias (Oreochromis sp.) and gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata). Edible and ornamental co...
متن کاملBiofloc technology application in aquaculture to support sustainable development goals
Biofloc technology (BFT) application offers benefits in improving aquaculture production that could contribute to the achievement of sustainable development goals. This technology could result in higher productivity with less impact to the environment. Furthermore, biofloc systems may be developed and performed in integration with other food production, thus promoting productive integrated syst...
متن کاملDeveloping a decision support system for sustainable cage aquaculture
A decision support system to assist cage aquaculture managers is presented. The system enables managers to perform four essential tasks: (i) site classification, (ii) site selection, (iii) holding capacity determination, and (iv) economic appraisal of an aquaculture farm at a given site. Based on measurements of water and substrate qualities, hydrometeorology and socioeconomic factors, a cage a...
متن کاملIs Continued Genetic Improvement of Livestock Sustainable?
Large genetic improvements in the quantitative traits of growth, production, and efficiency of farmed livestock have been made over recent decades, and by introduction of genomic technology these are being enhanced. Such continued improvement requires that there be available variation to utilize. The evidence is that little variation has been lost and such rates are indeed sustainable in the fu...

shores. Aquaculture—the farming of fish, shellfish, or aquatic plants—has grown rapidly over the past several decades, and that growth is accelerating. Today, some 4,000 aquaculture enterprises in the United States, most of them small to mid-size, supply Americans with Atlantic salmon, hard clams, oysters, shrimp, and nearly all the catfish and trout we eat. As the industry matures, it holds bo...
